Roussel French 0.950 Sterling Silver 170-Piece Flatware Set from Late 19th Century
Claude Roussel, French 0.950 (higher purity than sterling) silver 170-piece flatware set, from the late 19th century, beautifully adorned with stylized floral motifs, consisting of:
- 12 dinner knives measuring 9 1/2'' in length
- 12 luncheon knives measuring 7 1/2'' in length
- 12 dessert knives measuring 8 1/4'' in length
- 12 fish knives measuring 8 1/2'' in length
- 12 teaspoons measuring 4 3/4'' in length
- 24 soup spoons measuring 7 1/2'' in length
- 24 oval dessert spoons measuring 9'' in length
- 24 dinner forks measuring 9'' in length
- 12 fish forks measuring 7 1/4'' in length
- 24 salad forks measuring 7 1/2'' in length
- 1 bone holder measuring 8 1/2'' in length
- 1 fish server measuring 11'' in length
Each piece bears hallmarks as shown. Most pieces are monogrammed (the all-silver pieces in the back). Total approximate silver weight is 268 troy ounces including 1 troy ounce per knife. The set is sold in an original fitted wood chest as shown.
Claude Doutre Roussel was a French silversmith active since 1885 in Paris. He was active at 118 rue Vieille du Temple in the historic Marais district of Paris. He was part of a notable silversmithing dynasty. The founder of the Roussel Doutre family of silversmiths was Eugène Roussel Doutre, who registered his mark in March 1849 — a dynasty that lasted until 1969.
