A beautiful and rare Italian gilt sterling silver candelabra by the renowned maker Nardi. Designed with a twisted column and arms, figure of a mans head on top with pink bading around hat and chest, a lion motif between the start of the arms, and a beading pattern around bobeches and base of column. The candelabra is standing on a square stepped base with four lion feet. A truly magnificent and decorative candelabra. Measuring approximately 21'' tall and 15'' from arm to arm and standing on a square base measuring 8 3/4''. Weighing 130.8 troy ounces. Bearing hallmarks as shown.
Nardi is a Venetian silversmith and jeweler, whose patrons included Elizabeth Taylor, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly and whose techniques were inspired by those of 18th century Venetian goldsmiths.
This candelabra features at its center its signature blackamoor or “Moretti” figure which is often found on the company’s brooches. Carved from ebony or sardonyx, these brooches depict the head and shoulders of a turbaned “Moorish” male—the intended reference is often to Othello, the Moor of Venice, or to the valiant, warlike Hannibal.
