Royal German Maker Continental 19th Century Silver Covered Cup Centerpiece with Lady Justice
Sy & Wagner, continental silver covered cup from the 19th century, in Neoclassical style with classical friezes in geometric design, ornate natural motifs such as a laurel wreath. Dominating the lid is a highly realistic depiction of Lady Justice, holding 2 weights and a sword. It measures 15 1/2'' in height (11 1/4'' without the lid) by 5 1/4'' in diameter at the widest point, weighs 22.9 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown.
Sy & Wagner was a Berlin-based silversmith which received special orders from Emperor Wilhelm II of Prussia. Parts of these orders have been sold at prestigious auction houses, such as Christie’s. The company was founded by Jeremie Sy and Albert Wagner, who took over the business from J.G. Hossauer in 1859. The company Sy & Wagner existed until the First World War.
