John Mewburn English Sterling Silver Georgian Tray from 1814

John Mewburn, English sterling silver two-handled tray from 1814 (Georgian era), standing on 4 feet, with a gadrooned rim with a coat of arms at the center. It measures 27'' from handle to handle by 17'' in width by 2'' in height, weighs 120 troy ounces, and bears hallmarks as shown.

John Mewburn (1762–1830) was an English silversmith who established a prominent family dynasty of London craftspeople operating throughout the late 18th and early 19th centuries. He became a Freeman and later a Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths in June 1811, reflecting his standing and success within the London trade. John Mewburn initiated a three-generation family trade in London silver with his sons and grandson. Some of his pieces are in the collections of prestigious museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
